Measles in Utah, Sept. 9, 2025

The Utah Department of Health and Human Services (Utah DHHS) has confirmed that several people were exposed to and infected with measles after attending a Utah High School Cycling League event held at Soldier Hollow on August 16, 2025. Around 2,000 people were in attendance. Health officials are monitoring for additional cases from this and other league events.

“Measles is highly contagious and spreads easily, even at outdoor events,” said Dr. Leisha Nolen,” state of Utah epidemiologist. “Given the number of people who may have been exposed to measles at Soldier Hollow on August 16, 2025, we encourage attendees and participants of upcoming Utah High School Cycling League Region 6 events to check their MMR vaccination status.”

Persons who have received the MMR vaccine are well protected from measles. The MMR vaccine is effective and safe, and 2 doses are recommended for children 4 years and older. The MMR vaccine has been, for decades, one of the most effective tools for controlling the spread of measles.

Measles symptoms

Measles symptoms usually begin 1–2 weeks after exposure. Symptoms include a mild to moderate fever with a cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A few days later, the fever spikes, typically 101°F (38.3°C) or higher, and is followed by a blotchy rash that could appear red or darker than typical skin tone. The rash usually appears first on the face along the hairline and behind the ears. The rash rapidly spreads downward to the rest of the body. If you develop symptoms, you should stay away from other people and call your healthcare provider. Call first before you go to a clinic or hospital to prevent other people from exposure.

What we’re doing

Utah public health is working with the Utah High School Cycling League to inform families of race participants who attended the Soldier Hollow event on August 16, 2025. We are also working collaboratively to help prevent spread at ongoing practices and upcoming events.
